Surface finish is an important element in any specification of stainless steel. There are many different types of surface finish whereas some of these originate from the mill and others are applied later during processing.

Surface finish is a key factor in determining the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel surface. It is also essential for applications where appearance is of high importance.

Due to the exclusive nature of many suppliers’ finishes, it is unlikely that complete standardisation of all surface finishes is possible. However, below is a summary of the most common types.

Please find below more information about the most commonly used surface finishes.

HOT ROLLED

The most common hot rolled finish. A non- reflective, rough surface, commonly found in thick sheets Not normally used for decorative applications.

2B

MAT

The most common and widespread cold rolled mill finish to ensure good corrosion resistance, together with smooth, bright, slightly reflective surface. Mat is often the initial surface to create many other finishes. Typical uses include also non-decorative or functional sheet metal products, industrial refrigeration equipment, chemical plant and plumbing fixtures.

BA

BRIGHT ANNEALED

Highly reflective surface, smoother and brighter than 2B. Also common finish for further processing. Typical uses include architectural components, food processing equipment, chute liners, general hardware and catering equipment.

BRUSHED/SCOTCH BRITE

Brushed in a single direction by polishing belts or brushes. It has low grade roughness and a smooth, not very reflective surface. Suitable for internal architectural applications.

2K

3

BRUSHED/ SATINE

A finish achieved by using finer belts or brushes which gives the characteristic "fibrous" shape found in stainless steel liner domestic appliances such as refrigerators, ovens, etc. The orientation of the “fibre” is clear and distinct. Typical uses include catering equipment, lifts, shop fronts, architectural panels, restaurant equipment, control panels and luggage handling equipment.

DECORE

Specifically designed embossed surfaces with repeating patterns (eg. Dots, Linen, Leather, Rice-shaped, etc.) for specialized decorative uses. Very low degree of roughness resulting in higher resistance to corrosion.

TEAR-PLATE

Special finish on embossed surfaces with repeating patterns which provides a durable, anti-slip surface - the preferred choice for industrial flooring applications and slip resistant steps and stairs

SUPER MIRROR

Exceptionally shiny finish with a highly reflecting surface used in decorative and special requirement applications.
